What Are The Types Of Pollution?

|Types Of Pollution|

     Hello again! In my previous post, I explained about pollution by giving a brief and general explanation for "What Is Pollution?" Today, I would like go a little further and list a few of the common types of pollution. There are many types of pollution and while all types of pollution have adverse effect on the Earth, the magnitude at which each type affect the world that we live in is not the same. Here, I would like to list the types of pollution that are widely known to have negative impacts on our planet and give brief explanations for each of them (Detailed explanation coming soon as separate posts!) Without wasting time, let's most on to the list!

Air Pollution

     Air pollution is the process of introducing chemicalsparticulates, or biological matter into the atmosphere. The impurities in air cause discomfort, disease, or death to humans, damage other living organisms such as food crops, or damage the natural environment or built environment.

There are many sources of air pollution. Some of them are:
-->The burning of fossil fuels in vehicles and manufacturing
-->Volcanic eruptions, forest fires, and other natural process
-->Construction and demolition of buildings

The effect of air population may vary depending on the amount of pollutant present in the air. For humans, air pollution generally leads to damage in the respiratory and inflammatory systems. Damage done against plants and animals on the other hand, affects biodiversity and crop yield. Global warming is another condition that is commonly associated to increased air pollution.

Water Pollution

     Water pollution is the process in which water sources such as rivers, lakes and oceans are contaminated. Water pollution occurs when pollutants are discharged directly or indirectly into water bodies without proper treatment to remove harmful compounds.

Some of the many sources of water pollution are:
--> Littering and improper waste disposal
--> Oil pollution
--> Industrial wastes

The effects of water pollution vary and they greatly depend on the type of  chemicals/waste that are dumped and in what locations. However, generally water pollution kills sea organisms and disrupts the marine food chain.

Land Pollution

     Land pollution or soil pollution is the process in which the quality of the Earth's land surface deteriorates. Land pollution occurs as a direct and indirect result of human activities.

There are many sources of land pollution. Some of them are:
--> Waste matter, pesticides and fertilisers used in agriculture
--> Littering and formation of landfills
--> Toxic wastes from industries

Land or soil contamination affects crop yield and causes loss of wildlife habitat. Besides, landfills breed rodents that transmit diseases to humans.

Noise Pollution

     Noise Pollution is said to occur when unwanted sounds interfere with our daily life. Not all sounds can be said to cause noise pollution though. Generally, a noise pollution is said to occur when when you hear sounds from the same source in a very frequent basis to the extent that it is irritating.

The many sources of noise pollution include:
--> Social events such as parties
--> Modes of transportation such as cars, rails or even airplanes
--> Industrial activities such as manufacturing

Noise pollution or sound pollution may impact the hearing of a person who is exposed to them for a long period of time. What's more, constant nuisance may even increase your stress level!

Light Pollution

     Light pollution, also known as photopollution or luminous pollution, is the excessive illumination of a particular area by artificial light sources. or obtrusive artificial light

There are many sources of light pollution. They are:
--> Cities full of lighted skyscraper buildings
--> Advertising boards
Any form light emitted upward at night that is not blocked by buildings or trees will scatter throughout the atmosphere and brighten the night sky. This process disrupts star-gazing for astronomical purposes and for personal enjoyment.

That's all for today. Before you leave, watch this funny youtube video about pollution by rishimsh. So, you think pollution does not affect you?

Look forward for more soon! Till then. Byebye!

What Is Pollution? Pollution Defined!

   A Quick Glance At What This Blog is About

Hello everyone, since pollution is fast becoming a case worth worrying as our world evolves technology-wise, it has become a common thing for people to attempt to learn more about it so as to be able to do their part in overcoming the problem. Before you attempt to do anything about pollution however, allow me to answer a few questions for you. Each of these questions will answered in separate posts as I try to write a detailed answer for them.

  3. What are the Causes of Pollution?
  4. How to prevent Pollution?
  5. Why you must Go Green?
     This is the current list of questions that I am trying to answer for you. They may change over time as I find more interesting topics worth mentioning. You may find more about each of them in upcoming posts but for now, let me begin with "What is Pollution?"

     The term "pollution" is derived from a Latin word "polluere" which means 'to defile'. Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that causes an adverse effect to it. It is an undesirable change in the physical, chemical or biological characteristics of our air, water or land that in in turn results in harming the lives humans along with flora and fauna. For other species beside humans, pollution damages their habitat whilst for humans, pollution affects our industrial processes, living conditions and cultural assests.

     Pollution is generally created by human actions but there are cases of it occurring due to natural disasters as well. To learn more about the many types of pollution of that harms the Earth's environment please follow my upcoming posts. Till then, byebye!
